Trauma & Stress-Related Disorders
Ongoing effects of trauma or overwhelming stress on mood, sleep, and safety.
Trauma- and stress-related conditions, including PTSD, can develop after distressing or overwhelming experiences. Symptoms may include intrusive memories, hypervigilance, avoidance, difficulty sleeping, and changes in mood.
Momentum provides a discreet, compassionate space to be heard. Dr. Egenburg develops individualized treatment plans — including medication management and coordination with therapy — grounded in continuity and trust.
The short answer
Momentum Modern Psychiatry treats PTSD and other trauma- and stress-related conditions in adults. Dr. Egenburg provides a careful, discreet evaluation and an individualized plan that may include medication management and coordination with trauma-focused therapy, in person in Marlboro, NJ, or by telehealth in New Jersey and New York when clinically appropriate.
Common signs of trauma and stress-related disorders
Trauma can follow a single event — an accident, assault, or loss — or build over time through prolonged stress. Reactions vary widely, and symptoms can appear right away or months or years later.
Common signs include:
- Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares
- Avoiding reminders, places, or conversations related to the experience
- Feeling on guard, easily startled, or unable to relax
- Trouble sleeping or concentrating
- Irritability, anger, or emotional numbness
- Persistent guilt, shame, or negative beliefs about yourself or the world
- Feeling disconnected from people you care about
How Dr. Egenburg evaluates trauma-related symptoms
You won't be asked to share more than you're ready to. The 60-minute comprehensive evaluation focuses on how symptoms affect your life now, along with your psychiatric, medical, family, and psychosocial history.
Trauma often overlaps with depression, anxiety, sleep problems, and substance use. Understanding the whole picture helps Dr. Egenburg recommend care that addresses what's actually getting in your way.
Treatment options for PTSD and stress-related conditions
Medication management may include antidepressants such as SSRIs or SNRIs, and in some cases medications targeting specific symptoms like sleep disturbance or nightmares. Dr. Egenburg will explain the options and what to expect.
Trauma-focused therapy is a core part of treatment for many people. Momentum doesn't provide therapy in-house, but Dr. Egenburg can coordinate with your therapist or help you think through finding one.
Care is built on continuity and trust — seeing the same physician over time, at a pace that feels safe.
When to see a psychiatrist
Consider an evaluation if symptoms have lasted more than a month, are affecting your sleep, work, or relationships, or if you're relying on alcohol or other substances to cope.
If you're in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room.
In-person and telehealth care
Dr. Egenburg sees patients in person at the Marlboro, NJ office and by secure telehealth for adults located in New Jersey or New York, when clinically appropriate. Your first comprehensive evaluation is preferably done in person, so there's time to understand the full picture; many follow-up visits can then happen by video.
Frequently asked questions
Can a psychiatrist help with PTSD?
Yes. A psychiatrist can diagnose PTSD and related conditions, discuss medication options, and coordinate with a trauma-focused therapist.
Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail at the first visit?
No. You can share at your own pace. The evaluation focuses on how symptoms are affecting you now, and you're in control of what you discuss.
Can trauma treatment happen by telehealth in NJ or NY?
Yes, when clinically appropriate, for adults located in New Jersey or New York. Some people prefer the comfort of home; others prefer in-person visits in Marlboro. Both are available in New Jersey.
Is my information kept confidential?
